Men’s soccer stuns #1 ranked team in the nation

The Huskies were rude hosts to the No. 1 ranked in the country Mt. San Antonio College, earning a 1-1 tie, last Friday at Weingart Stadium.

The Huskies host Compton College on tomorrow at 2 pm, then close out the season hosting Cerritos College, the third ranked team in the nation, next Thursday at 6 p.m.

Mt. SAC is the No. 1 ranked junior college men’s soccer team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Mounties, two-time defending state champions, are also the top-ranked team in the state.

As a result of the tie, ELAC is the 10th ranked community college team in the state.

With the tie, Mt. SAC dropped out of first place in the South Coast Conference with 29 points. Cerritos, the third ranked team in the nation, is a top the conference standings with 30 points. East Los Angeles College is locked in third place with 16 points.

Mt. SAC opened up the scoring in the 13th minute of the first half after dominating play. Momentum in the second half switched to the Huskies who scored at minute fifty-four.

Setting up the score, Salvador Medrano, dribbling towards the right corner, crossed the ball to David Farias, who was running towards the left corner. Farias easily scored to the delight of the Husky crowd.

The tie puts the Huskies in a good position to earn a wild-card bid to the playoffs. The key will be the game against the Cerritos Falcons.
