In their last home game of the season, the women’s volleyball team defeated Long Beach City College Saturday night, three set to one. Despite playing a team who recently competed in a higher division, the Huskies combined all their efforts and dominated the match.
The team was lead by sophomore captains Roxanna Cardona, Jessica Espinoza, Bianca Acosta and freshman Marisa Carrillo. Their focus and competitive nature brought out the best in the team.
The first two sets of the game were easily taken by ELAC, 25-19 and 25-18. As the third set started, ELAC was looking for a clean sweep. After the Huskies took an early timeout in the third set, the Vikings came back ready. Long Beach made a stand and took the lead 11-9 in the third set.
Although ELAC put up a fight, it was not enough to finish off Long Beach who ended up taking the third set 25-18. The fourth set was by far the most exciting, both teams battled backand- forth after impressive passing, setting and spiking of the ball.
A timeout was taken by the Huskies when Long Beach City College tied up the score to 21 a piece. The Huskies came back after the timeout taking the fourth set 25-22, winning the match After winning, ELACs volleyball team rushed together and toppled over each other in celebration. They finished the season with a win and an overall record of 8-16, and 5-8 in the conference.
When asked about the upcoming women’s volleyball season, head coach Trisha Marx said she thinks she will focus on fundamentals and then gradually work into pinpointing certain areas. This is her fourth season coaching at ELAC.
The players of the team were excited about the victory, especially because it was their final home game of the season. Roxanna Cardona said that she enjoys competing and working hard with her teammates. Even after a tough season the volleyball team looks forward to improving and competing next season. Women’s volleyball team will have many starters returning next season.
