Water polo loses after 10-year absences

The women’s water polo team opened its first season with a home loss to Los Angeles Trade Tech.

This came after about 10 years of being absent from the list of sports played at East Los Angeles College.

The vocal crowd of about 100 fans screamed and chanted after each Husky goal, beginning with the first cutting Trade Tech’s lead 2 – 1, through the last goal with 12 seconds left.

After spotting Trade Tech a 17 – 1 lead during the final couple of minutes in the third quarter, the Huskies stormed back to outscore the Beavers, 7 – 2.

“Two-thirds of the team was playing their first water polo game ever. They got over their first game (jitters) and improved with each quarter,” ELAC Head Coach Erik Matheson said.

The team had no answer to Trade Tech’s Yanira Hernandez, who scored 11 goals.

The Huskies will compete in the Saddleback today and Friday beginning with an 11:20 a.m. match today.
