There are many misconceptions about vegan food such as it being bland and boring but Sage Vegan Bistro proves otherwise. The food is not only rich and flavorful but it makes you feel good supporting a local cruelty-free plant based restaurant. The only down fall is that some dishes can be a little expensive.
The bistro first opened on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. It became very popular, attracting many celebrities such as Moby, Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson.
Being nine miles away from East Los Angeles College, it’s a great place to grab lunch or dinner after class. An easy bus route takes you to the front door step of the bistro. Metro Rapid Line 770 toward downtown Los Angeles travels down Cesar E. Chavez Avenue where Metro Local Line 2/302 takes you to the historic Sunset Boulevard and to the restaurant.
Sage offers delicious vegan dishes, ice cream, organic craft beers and cocktails.
Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their sweet potato pancakes are amazing. They are served with apple cinnamon chutney or fresh seasonal compote, maple syrup and soy butter.
Their raw tacos are made with walnut cranberry ‘meat’, harissa, and sundried tomato cashew cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, pineapple with chilli rubben jicama and micro greens. Their delicious raw taco will cost $11.95.
They have many different meat alternatives such as tofu, walnut cranberry, butternut squash, jackfruit, to name a few. If nobody told you it wasn’t real meat, you wouldn’t know the difference. It’s actually even more flavorful and has a softer texture than real meat. This alternative meat comes in many of their dishes from all around the world.
These dishes are Jamaican jerk burger $11.95, Spicy Brazilian burrito $11.95, Falafel wraps $10.95, Classic tempeh burger $11.95, Banh mi sandwich $11.95 including a whole Mexican section.
For lunch they have eggplant parmesan which was breaded eggplant on grilled olive bread with cashew alfredo and marinara sauce. The sauce is perfectly rich and creamy.
Their Chipotle burger which is chipotle blueberry gazed black bean and walnut burger patter, lettuce, heirloom tomato, avocado, mayo, mustard and corn salsa is phenomenal. It was tasteful although a bit too spicy for me.
You can’t come to Sage and not try their dessert. Their vegan ice cream is absolutely mouth-watering. Their ice cream bar is stocked with a slew of different gelato style flavors. Everything from coconut based flavors, almond milk and cashew based flavors.
Their dessert is provided by KindKreme, which includes shakes, banana splits, smoothies, fresh juices and coffee. The drinks are delicious and yet different. The mojito and kombucha drink is made perfectly.
Sage Vegan Bistro opens its second location in Culver City in September. It has a great chic ambiance and the staff is really friendly. The décor has an industrial feel to it, exposing the pipes and vents, which work well. Although their Sunset location does not provide alcohol, their new location does. They have an interesting selection of great cocktails.
