Music is one way people express themselves, so many unique styles of music in the world today. Many people let their feelings out through music, either they sing or play an instrument. Some take it serious and make a career out of it, they start by uploading their music on YouTube or on social media in hopes of being discovered.

Soundcloud is a website and application where musicians can record and upload their music for the other users to hear. Founded in August 2007, Soundcloud lets its users upload and share their music with people around the world.

East Los Angeles College student Jesse Martinez uploads his band’s music on Soundcloud, A Place on Rugby, an indie mixed with alternative and electronica band. Martinez started uploading his music last year around November because he wanted people to hear his band.

Another ELAC student, Albert Irigollen, also uploads his music on Soundcloud, WARSHIP PRODUCTIONS. His music is a mixture of electronica, rave, alternative rock,  indie and rap. Every musician starts somewhere small, Soundcloud is his or her somewhere small.

A person can create a profile and share his or her music with others, and on different social medias such as Facebook and Twitter. He or she can also create a personal playlist with other musician’s music, follow them or “like” the tracks.

People upload about 12-hours of content every minute. There is no limit on how much music you can hear on the app, and it’s free.

While listening to a track on Soundcloud the track is shown graphically as waveforms and lets users comment on any part of the song they want.

In December 2014 this service attracted more than 175 million listeners and musicians. Soundcloud won the Schroders Innovation Award at the 2011 European Tech Tour Awards Dinner, The Schroders Innovation Award, recognizes European technology companies that bring a unique and original concept.

On May 2010 Soundcloud had one million subscribers, June 2011 they had five million users and investments from Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary. The numbers of subscribers have grown every year and continues to grow.
