Scholarships available for eligible for Elans

Applications for fall semester scholarships offered by the East Los Angeles College Foundation are now open for Elans. Eligible students can receive up to $1,000 for school-related expenses.

Student applicants must be enrolled full-time with a minimum 3.0 grade point average as well as having completed 24 or more degree applicable units prior to applying.

Eligible students must also be receiving the Board of Governor’s Fee Waiver and have financial aid eligibility.

Students will then be prompted to fill out the rest of the application which includes a questionnaire and a 300 minimum word essay.

ELAC Foundation Development assistant Irynne Isip recommends students spend extra time on the essay.

“You want to stand out from all the rest of the applicants. The scholarship committee will be looking at everything from content to punctuation and originality,” Isip said.

Choosing the scholarship winners takes approximately three and a half weeks. They are notified the second week of November.

There will be an award ceremony for the winners on Nov.17 at the campus center’s multi purpose room. The scholarships offered by the ELAC Foundation are exclusive to Elans which makes the chances of winning much higher. Winners in the past have been surprised that they’ve won.

“I think if students actually took the time to apply for these scholarships, they’d be surprised to see they can win” said Jade Inglada, a former Elan and scholarship winner.

Pedro Flores, also a former Elan and scholarship winner says the scholarship money helped.

“I transferred with the help of that money. I got 500,” Flores said.

It takes about two weeks from when winners are notified to receive the money. As long as winners stay full-time they keep the money they receive.

Students with a Higher One Card can receive their funds in as little as two weeks from their notification date.

The process is a little longer for those who do not have a Higher One card, however financial aid does assist winners with the process. Winners without a Higher One card are given a packet with further instructions to then receive the card in the mail.

To apply, students can visit elacfoundation.com and click on the scholarships tab and create an account. Students are encouraged to use their LACCD email to prevent verification problems later in the process.

The deadline to apply is Oct. 3 before midnight.
