Adelante First Year Experience program (FYE) hosted a Zumba Session for all East Los Angeles College students and faculty to come and de-stress. FYE Adelante program is geared toward first year students, but this event was open for all. The class consisted of cardio mainly synchronized upper body and lower body movements. By the third song the speed increased but the participants kept up with the pace.
The Associate Dean in Academic Affairs, Vanessa Ochoa, Ph.D. oversees FYE program and organized the event. Later in the class, a few participants took small breaks while the rest of the participants continued to Zumba. The event included two water breaks but students could take extra breaks if they needed to.
Tennis shoes were a must. One person who did not bring tennis shoes opted to participate with socks only. Participants sported various attire from athlete to casual clothing. One participant wore medium high heels kept up with the class by only participating on the less rigorous movements.
The music choice varied from Beyoncé’s “Run the world (Girls)”, Sergio Mendes’ “Magdalenha”, to Carlos Vives and Shakira’s “La Bicicleta.” The cool down stretch song was “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers.
At the end, the group participated in the “Mannequin Challenge” where participants posed as mannequins while a song plays in the background. During these challenges usually the song is “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd is played alongside with it. The video has been uploaded to Instagram @adelantefye.
The event was hosted on Tuesday the 15th at F5 Multipurpose room from noon to 1:30 p.m. The event was free and open for students and faculty. The instructor was Cynthia Guardado, a student at ELAC. The total count of participants based on the sign-in sheet was 27.
Brenda Padilla, a student at ELAC said that she enjoys dancing and “saw the opportunity to be part of the class.”. Gloria Mendez said that her Health Teacher Ms. Owens mentioned the Zumba class as an extra credit assignment. Kimble Yuan another excited participant said that his reason for coming was to “just have fun.”. David Cruz who works with the Adelante Office (FYE) came and participated as well.
Upcoming FYE events are Meditation on December 1st from noon to 1 p.m. and the FYE Talent Show on December 2nd which begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. The FYE talent show will be held at the F5 Multipurpose room.
