Harry Styles Album Debut Review

By Rebekah de la Pena

Since the worldwide debut of boy-band One Direction, Harry Styles has been at the front and center of it all, stealing millions of girls’ hearts.

Debuting his self-titled solo project, “Harry Styles”, listeners hear a very different side of this very talented 23-year-old.

“Meet Me in the Hallway” starts the album off with slow and simple guitar chords. The album continues with soft sounds and singing, however the lyrics feel deep and in tune with his emotions.

We hear lyrics from the second track, “Sign of the Times”, that read: “You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky, you look pretty good down here, but you ain’t really good” with such deep emotion behind them.

It then jumps to the somewhat angry sixth track, “Only Angel”, with lyrics that read: “I must admit I thought I’d like to make you mine, as I went about my business through the warning signs, end up meeting in the hallway every single time, and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

The album ends with, “From the Dining Table”, which brings feelings of nostalgia about not having spoken to a former lover and hoping one day she’ll call him and tell him she is sorry.

One Direction is famous for their catchy love songs, so when listening to Harry Styles, the songs were completely the opposite of that.

Styles would be loosely categorized as soulful, folk and soft rock; the genres he has cited as having the biggest influence on him.

It sounds like Styles put a lot of work into this album, trying to make it known that he isn’t just a pop singer, but an artist with no labels; by writing ten songs with totally different emotions, ranging from melancholy, love, disdain, and nostalgia.

Although all the songs truly did sound the same, the message he is trying to send by releasing a solo project with a completely different sound than the regular One Direction lovey dovey songs is well received.

It is refreshing to see an artist put so much work and real effort into his or her music.

The music industry tends to label and categorize musicians, putting them into only one box that is very hard to branch out of.

Many artists have done what Harry has and received tremendous support and love from fans.

Styles’ solo project truly showed his fans what lies behind the façade of what is One Direction.

He has really proven himself to be a well-rounded musician (singer and songwriter for many famous singers).

Hopefully Harry continues to release music that shows us who he really is behind the spotlight.
