ELAC Jazz Band Performance Powerful and Lively

By Jorge Vazquez

The ELAC Jazz Band held a concert on May 12, 2017 in the S2 Building. Admission was free and snacks were sold in the lobby. Though the Jazz performance was free, patrons were encouraged to donate to the music program afterwards.

Despite never being to that venue, the ELAC Jazz Band was welcoming to regulars and newcomers alike. Upon entering, the 17 band members were already playing with conductor and director, Bob Dawson, keeping tempo. The set consisted of 13 songs with playful, well-spirited banter.

They played covers of such artists as, Bob Florence, Tower of Power, and Thelonious Monk. The song “Round Midnight” by Monk was one of the more atmospheric and sensual performances that stood out. The show ultimately lasted 2 hours and at the end, Dawson announced his possible retirement. Trumpet player, Bobby Chavez is taking the position of Dawson if he follows through with the retirement.

Pianist, Stephen Alvarez, along with Tenors, Ivan Romero Bautista and Arturo Gallardo, are part of the Applied Music program at ELAC that allowed them to gain their musical experience.

The next performance held in the S2 hall is an ELAC Student Piano Recital scheduled for Monday, May 22nd at 12 noon which will be free as well.
