Caked LA is a local bakery and tea cafe that carries vibrant baked goods and drinks.
Their closest location is right across the street from East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
Their menu includes items as simple as fruit tarts, cookies and milk teas, but also a wide variety of jazzy items such as their famous unicorn cake, unicorn milkshake, dirty monster and rainbow crush.
The employees help people choose items that suit their cravings and are happy to accomodate to a customer’s needs. Apart from a friendly staff, the business has paintings of unicorns on the walls and a brightly decorated backdrop for visitors to take pictures.
“The service was great. I felt really welcomed, and I liked their recommendations,” said Alma Rico, a customer at Caked LA.
They are best known for their unicorn cake, which consists of three layers of brightly colored sponge cake that are topped with white frosting, pink sprinkles and an edible unicorn horn.
They don’t only create pastries for their shops, “We cater cakes and pastries for offices and events,” said Marie, the manager of the Monterey Park location.
Caked LA has a wide drink selection which also has lively colors to make the drinks look appealing and appetizing.
The rainbow crush is a magical combination of blue tea and lemonade with whipped cream and various candies to add to the aesthetic.
When dining in, customers can get their drinks served in a mason jar. Caked LA has something to offer for everyone’s taste buds.
If customers are in the mood for something sweet to drink, they have the unicorn shake and the dirty monster. “I don’t go to many pastry shops but the presentation was very impressive,” said Rico. The dirty monster is a cookies-n-cream milkshake topped with whipped cream, cookie crumbles, and an edible unicorn horn and ears, which are both made of marshmallow.
The unicorn shake is a strawberry banana milkshake that has toppings similar to that of the rainbow crush.
If customers are looking for something a little more simple and refreshing with the same showiness, Caked LA has items like milk teas, or any other tea, which can be topped with either a slice of rainbow unicorn cake, a cloud or a cream mill.
Their cloud is a large piece of cotton candy which extends from the top of the cup to the top of the straw. A cream mill is a giant cream puff topped with icing and the customers choice of extra toppings.
“The colors in the pastries were my favorite part. I also enjoyed how the cakes were decorated like unicorns, but had different styles,” said Rico.
The variations that customers can create with these baked goods and teas make them enticing and picture-perfect. “Social media helps us a lot. People from different countries even stop by. We are very busy everyday, and the weekends are our busiest time,” said Marie.
The store originally opened in 1991 and was formerly known as Kelley’s Bakery. Both locations opened up around the same time, but since 2016, they have rebranded.
“We have the same baker. We have just upgraded all of the drinks, cakes and pastries,” said Marie. Although Caked LA offers a very comforting environment, it is not a family owned business. Marie was uncomfortable with sharing her last name.
Caked LA is located at 2119 S Atlantic Blvd, Monterey Park and it is open everyday of the week, but the hours vary. Monday – Thursday they are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday – Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
