After having one season in a higher division under its belt, the football team is preparing for the next season.
“(I am) definitely expecting a better year than last season,” said Linebacker and Special Teams Coach Jonathan Cervantes. “We moved up to a tougher division so we didn’t have the depth to compete as well as we wanted to last year, and I think this year we’ll make up that ground.”
Cervantes said that they completed a good spring ball practice last week, which consisted of four weeks of practice.
“We’ll take a few weeks off so the guys can focus on finals and then we’ll start back up again in June,” Cervantes said.
For head coach Robert Godinez, he is looking forward to competing at the highest level and seeing their foundation grow.
“Our goal is to win the conference and win a state championship. Our goals are definitely lofty because we know how good we can be,” Godinez said.
Cervantes said that they will have a lot of key players back, as well as recruited athletes. Cervantes added that the recruiting process is a year-long process.
“We can’t officially sign anybody, so kids can always tell any college out here that they’re coming, but they’re not here until they’re here,” said Cervantes. “So we will be recruiting all the way until August.”
Cervantes said that they have one of the toughest schedules in California, but believes they are in the right track.
“The biggest thing is you got to be always constructive with them,” Cervantes said. “Just coaching our guys to find the mistakes they made and correct them while they’re out there, whether it’s in the field or during film study.”
As the season begins, Godinez said that he treats the team the same everyday.
“We strive to improve every practice and every day. If we can all be on the same page and keep going in the right direction, then the sky is the limit,” Godinez said.
