Fear not students, vital resources that are used daily during Spring and Fall semesters are available during the Winter semester at East Los Angeles College. The shortened semesters are quick paced and intense running from January 6 to February 9. Having the knowledge of which services are available during this time is imperative for students.
The campus library is an important resource for students to use during the few weeks that make up the shortened Winter semester. Choonhee Rhim, chair of the library department, said that the library hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday the library is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Over at the South Gate facility the library hours are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. With the library being closed Friday through Sunday.
“All staff will be working in the winter intersession,” Rhim said. She said that the online tools would also be available during the winter session.
ELAC’s Student Health Center is open to students during the winter semester. Cecilia Cruz, coordinator for the student health center, said that the all the regular services would be available for the winter.
“The Nurse Practitioner and the Mental Health Counselors will be here. Students seeking services must be registered in Winter classes and have proof of payment, Health Fee sticker or receipt, of the Winter health fee,” Cruz said.
She said that one of the plans that the center has put together for the winter session is yoga. The events will take place January 15 and 29 in the auditorium foyer. The sessions are from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
“Everyone is welcome. Bring your mat. Limited number of mats available to borrow. This is a gentle, slow-paced class, everyone is encouraged to just do what feels right to them, relax and enjoy,” Cruz said.
Student support groups will be meeting as usual during the weeks of January. Cruz said that since the winter session is different, the best way to find out about times and schedules would be to call the center at 323-265-8651. The center opens Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Fridays.
The Associated Student Union will be active during the Winter session and all the normal services it provides will be available to students starting this January. Brian Ha, president of ASU said that green books, scantrons, and all the other services would be ready to go for any student that may need them.
“For the main campus, the office is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Friday it is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the South Gate Campus, I will be working with my team to come up with a comprehensive office schedule.” Ha said.
