“Fresh” is one of the first words that comes to mind when considering bakeries. No one likes the taste of three-day-old refrigerated cake. At Brioche Pastries, a family-owned bakery, the cakes are moist, soft and delicious with no taste of refrigeration.
Chocolate lovers have a hard choice of the German chocolate, raspberry dark chocolate and grandma’s chocolate cake. The vanilla strawberry cake may be one of the most common requests at bakeries, but Brioche is able to make its stand out. It’s white chocolate bottom gives it an extra flavor.
Compared to tiramisus at places like Amy’s Pastries, Caked LA and
even Disneyland, however, Brioche was hands-down the most worth-it for the price, portion, taste and freshness.
Other flavors include carrot, red velvet, white chocolate and coconut cream. Brioche also sells fruit tarts, cheesecakes, macaroons and some of the thickest cookies you’ll see locally.
Of course, none of these delectibles would be complete without something warm to wash it down. The bakery also provides coffees, teas and hot chocolate. The shop is small but is still able to give off a comfortable vibe. The staff is friendly, helpful and seem dedicated to their love of baking. The only downside is that some days, there are a very limited number of choices while bakers are working on more.
However, this can easily be avoided by calling ahead to ask what they have available at the moment or when it is a better time to visit. This is definitely not a place to pick up a last-minute, full-sized cake.
Speaking of full-sized cakes, the six inch cakes feed between four and six people and cost around $27. Custom cakes are a bit more pricey, but worth it. With the current state of things during the COVID-19 pandemic, customers should be urged to shop local, small businesses.
Brioche Pastries is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is located at 1916 W. Whittier Blvd in Montebello and the number is (323) 530-0088.
