The East Los Angeles College softball team’s shot at making it to the playoffs was on thin ice, but they are still in the running after winning against Rio Hondo on Friday 5-2.
The Huskies hopes lie in winning their next few games.
The Huskies scored the first run of the game during the bottom of the first inning.
Dani Varela singled to right field bringing Nathalie Cordova to home base.
During the bottom of the second inning, with Priscilla Hernandez on first base, Ariana Cobian grounded out to the first baseman.
However, an error by the Roadrunners allowed the Huskies to score again, making it 2-0.
Things got intense during the fourth inning when the Roadrunners scored their first run of the game.
Thanks to a run batted in by Roadrunner’s third baseman Nadine Marquez, making it 2-1.
The victory lasted less than half an inning, when the Huskies’ Irene Huizar and Cordova scored back-to-back runs after Irene Dorado went up to bat. Dorado reached first base on an error by Rio Hondo’s shortstop Heaven Wolf almost caught the ball, but dropped it and propelled the Huskies forward 4-1.
The game remained static until the bottom of the fifth inning when Varela scored the Huskie’s final run of the game with an RBI single to left center by Cobian, making it 5-1
During the top of the sixth inning, the odds were stacking up against the Huskies with all bases loaded by Rio Hondo.
Head coach Erika Blanco pulled out Lopez and let relieving pitcher Lauren Tate finish off the game.
Tate threw a wild pitch that allowed Arianna Amezcua, who was on third base, to advance home for the last run of the game, bringing the score 5-2.
Tate redeemed herself by striking out Alexis Rivera for the second out of the top of the sixth.
The Huskies outed Rio Hondo to finish off the seventh inning, bringing the game to a close.
Before their win against Rio Hondo, the Huskies were in 18th place in the California Community College Athletic Association for the South Coast Conference.
They are now in 17th place, giving them a chance to turn their odds around and make it to the playoffs.
Aside from their game on Monday against Mt. San Antonio, they have two more games left in the regular season.
