Minorities with governmental power caught making racist remarks about other minorities is not only ridiculous, but it is depressing.
Los Angeles City Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León were caught making, or laughing at, racist and violent comments about their constituents and even a toddler.
Minorities often endure racism and belittling simply for looking different or having the ability to speak another language.
The councilmembers’ remarks and willingness to engage in the leaked conversations showed how they did not mind contributing to race-war tensions between Black and Latino communities in Los Angeles.
Countless news videos have shown Black and Latino individuals attacking and retaliating against one another in racially charged incidents.
Both groups are pitted against one another, sometimes by their own doing, due to ignorant views.
The councilmembers simply egged that on, causing more friction between the two groups.
Martinez resigned after the recorded comments leaked, taking some responsibilty. The actions of other councilmembers only further embarass the city council.
For them to even pretend to be sorry and claim to care about advocating minorities is a joke
As if pitting two minorities against one another is not bad enough, the group of council members also ridiculed and belittled Oaxacans.
Oaxaca is a state in Mexico with residents that have mostly indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec backgrounds.
Many still speak the native tongues, 16 in total, that date back to 2000 BC.
The councilmembers’ negative comments about Mexicans of Oaxacan background showed their part in hypocritical and ignorant within-group racial discrimination.
