Keto restaurant creates low carb bliss

By Marina Gutierrez

Treat Yourself Keto is a local restaurant inspired by restaurant owner Karolyne Mier’s personal weight loss journey.

Mier has had the business since 2020 but didn’t formally open until 2021 due to the pandemic. Mier is one of many who successfully lost weight due to the keto diet.

Mier said she lost a total of 60 pounds due to being on keto. Her weight loss is what inspired her to open up her restaurant.

Mier noticed it was hard to cut out carbs and sugar, and still get to enjoy tasty food.

“My appetite remained the same but my options of what I could eat were beyond limited. At first, I thought going keto meant I had to say goodbye to good food. Then I realized all the low carb and sugar free alternatives there are, and I became a keto chef,” Mier said.

She wanted to make a low carb twist to all her traditional favorites.

Mier was able to transform her low carb food by substituting corn and flour tortillas with low carb tortillas. By making this change, she was able to modify popular Mexican dishes such as carne asada nachos and chilaquiles. Both of these are best sellers.

Chilaquiles are fried tortilla pieces usually made with a red sauce, but Mier uses a green sauce that is cilantro based and tastes absolutely delicious. The low carb corn tortillas are fried to a crisp, golden brown. This creates the perfect base for her homemade sauce.

Similarily to her chilaquiles, Mier fries the corn tortillas to perfection for the nachos. It’s topped with guacamole, cheese, sour cream and cilantro.

Customers can choose from a variety of meats such as carne asada, chicken, al pastor or chorizo.

Each meat is carefully seasoned and cooked until tender.

The restaurant also offers low carb breakfast and dinner burritos, as well as low carb enchiladas. Mier’s red sauce enchiladas are a flavorful option, representing authentic Mexican cuisine in a low carb manner.

During the holidays she even makes low carb tamales and menudo.

Mier substitutes regular bread for low carb bread, which greatly broadens her menu options. She makes low carb buffalo chicken sandwiches, as well as low carb cheeseburgers.

Mier’s chicken sandwiches are comparable in taste and size to Chick-Fil-A sandwiches and don’t disappoint.

Along with a variety of low carb food, Mier bakes sugar free and low carb desserts. Cupcakes, cakes, pan dulce, muffins, scones, and more are all a part of Mier’s guilt-free dessert menu.

Sugar substitutes often have an unsettling aftertaste, but Mier found a way to leave a sweeter taste after every bite.

Mier takes orders in advance for custom sugar-free cakes for special events.

The keto diet consists of no more than 25-50 grams of carbs a day and 0-5 grams of sugar intake. Being consistent on this diet causes the body to go into ketosis. This leads the body to start burning fat.

Not all of Mier’s customers are on the keto diet. For example, her restaurant has greatly benefitted those who are diabetic as well.

“I have a lot of customers who are diabetic and need to watch what they eat while still having a sweet tooth. It brings me great joy to be able to help people improve their overall health,” Mier said.

With her customers’ health in mind, she sells take home meal prep orders as well.

Mier’s food and desserts do not disappoint, and her customers leave raving reviews.

Diets inevitably come with a lot of restriction which tends to stop people from doing them.

Mier shows her customers that restriction doesn’t always have to mean tasteless food.

Granted, low carb and sugar free food are not going to have the same taste as one’s favorite comfort food.

However, Treat Yourself Keto offers healthy, delicious meals and treats that satisfy urges regret free.

People who are on a keto diet, diabetic or just looking for a healthier alternative—anyone is welcome to stop by Monday through Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at 3501 Beverly Blvd. in Montebello.
